Pritt Properties to Redevelop Historic Carlton Building / by Brianna Kelly

The Carlton Building is becoming the newest addition to the rapidly changing face of Main Street in downtown Akron. Renovations to the building, which has been vacant for over a decade, will begin this week.

Located at 201 South Main Street, the building was recently purchased in December of 2018 by Pritt Properties, founded by Ryan and Jeffrey Pritt.

“Redeveloping the Carlton Building is very exciting for us,” said Jeffrey Pritt.

“There’s something special about historic buildings, so when the opportunity presented itself to acquire the Carlton Building, we were more than interested,” added Ryan Pritt.

At 119-years-old, The Carlton Building is the oldest-remaining building in the South Main Historical District, which was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 2008. Built in 1900, the building is best known as the former home of Carlton’s Clothes for over 45 years. It has also been home to an auto parts store, furniture stores and multiple other businesses, but has been empty since 2001.

“Downtown Akron is going through such an exciting revitalization right now and we’re so excited to be a part of that and bring this incredible and historic building back to life after over a decade of dormancy,” said Ryan Pritt.

“When this project is complete, the Carlton Building will be reborn from an abandoned shell with great bones to an active, completely modernized workspace for downtown businesses,” said Jeffrey Pritt.

The upper levels of the almost 10,000 square foot building will become the new home of Pritt Entertainment Group. PEG, which is also owned by Ryan and Jeffrey Pritt, will be renovating and building out the space into custom, state-of-the-art offices complete with editing suites and a studio.

“We’ve been proud to call Akron home for our business [PEG] since it was founded 11 years ago,” said Ryan Pritt, “and we’re such believers in the progress being made downtown that we really wanted to be a part of it on an even bigger level.”

The first floor, street-level space is available for an additional tenant to lease and build out to suit their specific needs, and add to the renewed vibrancy downtown.
